Benin is officially called the Republic of Benin. The national language is French, but indigenous languages are also spoken often. Benin was previously a French colony named French Dahomey, which gained independence in 1960.

Benin has an area of 114,763 sq km, a population of 10.3 million, and a low HDI of 0.36.
