Sierra Leone is officially called the Republic of Sierra Leone. It is predominantly Islamic, but is one of the most religiously tolerant countries in the world. Sierra Leone was previously a British colony, but gained independence in 1961.

Sierra Leone’s name originally meant “Lioness Mountains” in Portuguese. It has an area of 71,740 sq km, a population of 6.1 million, and a low HDI of 0.336.
