Belarus is officially called the Republic of Belarus. Until the 20th century, the region of Belarus belonged to several countries/empires. After the Russian Revolution, Belarus declared independence and became a founding member of the UN and the USSR in 1945. Belarus gained full independence after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Its Democracy Index is the lowest in Europe; its government is currently a authoritarian unitary presidential republic.
