Vanuatu is officially called the Republic of Vanuatu. It was first inhabited in 2000 BCE, and has first contact with Europeans in 1606 with a Portuguese exploration team. France and Britain jointly ruled over the islands in the 1900s, and Vanuatu gained independence in 1980.
It has an area of 12,190 sq km, a population of 224,000, and a medium HDI of 0.626.
