China is officially called the People’s Republic of China. It has a land area of 9,671,018 sq km, a population of 1.3 billion (largest in the world), and a medium HDI of 0.699. It has 56 recognized ethnic groups, of which Han is the largest (92% of the population). Its government is a single-party people’s republic, ruled by the Communist Party of China. The area has been inhabited between 250,000 and 2.24 million years ago. Its first imperial dynasty was the Xia, which emerged in 2070 BCE.
