Mozambique is officially called the Republic of Mozambique. The region was previously controlled by the Portuguese, and gained independence in 1975. This was followed shortly by an intense and protracted civil war from 1997 to 1992.

Mozambique has a population of 23.9 million, a low HDI of 0.393, and an area of 801,590 sq km.
