Algeria is officially called the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. It is the largest country in Africa. Algeria was conquered by Muslim arabs in the mid 7th century, and much of the local population adopted Islam. It was later part of the Ottoman Empire, and was then conquered by France in 1830. Algeria gained independence in 1962. The country is a semi-presidential republic in name, but is classified as an authoritarian regime by the Democracy Index. Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been the president for 4 consecutive terms.

Algeria has an area of 2,381,741 sq km, a population of 38.7 million, and a high HDI of 0.713.
