Poland is officially called the Republic of Poland. Its name was coined in 966, and in 1569 it formed a union called the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth. The Commonwealth collapsed in 1895, and Poland finally gained independence in 1918. Poland became a liberal democracy in 1989.
It has an area of 312,679 sq km, a population of 38.5 million, and a very high HDI of 0.821.
