Serbia is officially called the Republic of Serbia. It was part of the Roman Empire, and seventeen Roman emperors were born in Serbia. After two Serbian uprisings, the nation gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1867. It is in disputes with Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008. It is now an upper-middle income economy, with universal health care and free (primary and secondary) education.

It has an area of 88,361 sq km, a population of 7.1 million, and a high HDI of 0.769.
