East Timor is also called the Democratic Republic of East Timor or Timor Leste. It is on the east side of the island of Timor, which is named after the Malay word for “east”, timur. It has a total area of 14,874 sq km, a population of about 1 million, and a medium HDI of 0.576.
It was previously controlled by Portugal and Indonesia, and has been in conflict with Indonesia in the late 1900s - early 2000s.
